Privacyverklaring — OWN Messenger

Laatst bijgewerkt: 28 oktober 2026

Privacy Policy — OWN Messenger

Last updated: 28 October 2026

OWN Messenger is a messaging app on its own server, see www.ownmessaging.com. The app and the server are made and run by Niel Heesakkers. The app works exclusively with the OWN server.

What the app collects

No analytics, no advertising, no third-party crash reporting and no advertising identifier. The OWN server does hold, unencrypted: your user name, your display name and profile picture, and your device's push address (needed to deliver notifications), and the email address you link to your account. That address is only used to let you set a new password yourself; the mail for it goes through our own mail server, as recovery@ownmessaging.com. That is all the administrator can see; not your messages or files.

The app keeps your recovery key in your iCloud Keychain, so your old messages come back by themselves on a new iPhone. Apple encrypts the keychain so that Apple itself cannot read it; the OWN server never sees the key.

A few features, only when you use them, involve another company:

Where your messages go

Everything you send — text, photos, videos, voice messages, locations — goes to the OWN server, encrypted from device to device using the Matrix protocol. The server stores the encrypted messages and files so your other devices can fetch them; it cannot read them. Neither can the server's administrator. A conversation created elsewhere without encryption shows an open padlock.

What the device itself does

What you control

You can export a conversation as an encrypted archive only you can open, let messages disappear after a chosen time, and wipe all of the app's data from the device with the emergency code.
